Maritime scholars take a keen interest in Dubai Maritime City

Scholars, University officials and students of Transport Economics at renowned Dutch university, Erasmus University, Rotterdam recently visited the project site of Dubai Maritime City, the largest and the most comprehensive maritime complex in the world as part of an annual academic project.

The official delegation visit from Erasmus University, Rotterdam was held to promote excellence in the field of Maritime and Marine Transport Education. The visit which took place last week was organized by Transito, a 150 member study association for the Bachelors and Masters in Urban, Port and Transport Economics at the Erasmus University Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

The day long visit included a dynamic presentation, overview of the project followed by a Site Tour that offered visitors the chance to glimpse development at the first ever purpose built city designed specifically for the global maritime community. Visitors were shown around the complex that will soon be an extraordinary mixed-use environment covering every aspect of industrial, commercial and leisure requirements for the maritime industry.

Dubai Maritime City, in its endeavours to support and promote Maritime Education will house a dedicated Academic Quarter that will lead the way in the Middle East and broader region for maritime training and research as well as complement the various needs of maritime tenants and related businesses based in the development.

Welcoming the delegation, Mr. Amer Ali, CEO of Dubai Maritime City said: ‘We are very pleased to have students from Erasmus University visit our multidimensional maritime centre. We fully support educational programs and specialized training that extends beyond the classroom, in light of today’s increasingly competitive industry and rapid globalization which has led to a greater demand for quality. ‘

He further Added: ‘At Dubai Maritime City, we are keen to demonstrate the originality of the Middle East as we showcase the dynamic facets of Dubai, which generates so much attention the world over. We are building an exceptional mixed-use environment for the maritime community that will become a benchmark for future developments worldwide. The idea is not just to satisfy immediate needs of the Maritime Community but assist and foster growth of the sector by creating a progressive dynamic environment that will become an industry standard.’

Transito is the study association for the bachelor and master Urban, Port and Transport Economics at the Erasmus University Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The association has around 150 members, all in the final stage of their studies. Transito organizes many activities during the academic year in order to form a bridge between theory and practice, between the students and the staff of the university, as well as between the students and possible future employers. These events include activities such as workshops, company visits and conferences. Besides that, Transito organizes a yearly study project and this year’s subject is Dubai and its extensively growing economy.

The aim of the project is to gain knowledge on Dubai. There are several themes on which the delegation has focused their research. These are: leisure and waterfront developments, the marketing of Dubai in a global perspective, tourism, and the development of transport facilities of the country.
