Nakheel Retail launches new eco bag

Monday, February 16, 2009

Nakheel Retail, the owner of Ibn Battuta Mall and Dragon Mart, is encouraging the use of eco-friendly shopping by launching a range of stylish, re-usable shopping bags.

Bags are on sale from outlets at Ibn Battuta Mall.

Made from Jute, a fully sustainable natural fibre and one of the world’s strongest, the bags come in two styles: Slouchy Bag and Shopper. With slogans including ‘plastic is so least season’, and ‘I love green’, the bags are a must-have fashion accessory.

Bernice Boshoff, General Manager, Ibn Battuta Mall, comments:

‘Nakheel’s commitment to sustainability runs through every part of our business and the introduction of the eco bag at our retail outlets is just another part of our on-going commitment to make a difference.’

‘With the success of similar initiatives worldwide, we are confident that the bags will be a hit with the local Dubai community,’ Boshoff added.

Jute is farmed using traditional methods without the use of pesticides or GM chemicals. A fully sustainable fibre, it is estimated that there is enough jute in the world to provide everyone with 2 eco-bags a year. The whole of the plant is used, with the outer leaves and bark used for food and firewood.

2009 has already been a successful year for Ibn Battuta Mall. Last month, Nakheel launched an ‘Emergency Donation’ appeal to collect aid supplies to transport to Gaza, with collection points at Ibn Battuta. The appeal raised Dhs24,618.50 and January also saw the beginning of the 2009 Dubai Shopping Festival with a recorded 10% increase in footfall over the same month last year.
